Deep thinkers can’t help it - they just think deeply. Many Christians feel like they should think deeply, but the demands of life make it hard. Focusing at work distracts us from thinking deeply about Jesus. Children requiring attention, time, and discipline make meditation on the Bible a challenge. Modern entertainment numbs us from thinking philosophically about our modern worldview. Should we give up as Christians? Not at all. Do we need to know all about the treatises of Socrates? Of course not. Here is what we do need as Christians - a basic understanding of the Christian philosophical worldview.

Isn’t this complicated? No more than any daily thoughtful activity. The basic tenets of any worldview is how one understands human origins, meaning, morality, and destiny. The fact of philosophical history that does not include Jesus is that worldviews trend toward cynicism, skepticism, and absence of any sort of deity (materialism). This is what has led 1/3 of American adults under 30 to declare themselves as “nones” (no religious affiliation) in a recent Pew survey. This is the highest amount ever recorded. This is a tragedy resulting from philosophy and deep thinking apart from God.

The Christian worldview is easy to understand. God has given us truth in His Word and in His Creation that points to a worldview that is both understandable and hopeful. Christians believe human origins are directly from God in creation - we are created in God’s image. This, in turn, gives us meaning. We are created by God to live for God. God also gives us a universal morality found in the Bible. Instead of human opinion guiding our worldview, it is God’s Word. Finally, our destiny is heaven. We have an eternal home that is hopeful and gives us peace even in death.

This Sunday we will see the Apostle Paul in Athens confronting the deepest thinkers of the day. He has ammunition in the Christian Worldview that stands up to them. We have the same today!
