One of Toyota’s marketing campaigns demonstrates how easy it is to buy a car by having a big “easy” button. The premise of the campaign is to play on people’s desire for things to be easy. There is enough things in our world that are hard! Let’s have something that is easy! The Apostle Paul suggests that obtaining Jesus’s righteousness is easy. Why? Because Jesus has done everything for us, in our place, to obtain the righteousness that we need to stand before God - it does not get any easier than having it done for us. But not everyone accepts easy righteousness.
In the Old Testament, God required total obedience to the Law. In order for people to be righteous before God, they had to obey every law, all the time, in every circumstance. No exceptions. This was hard. It was so hard no one was able to achieve righteousness on their own. It was impossible. This was actually the point of God giving the law - to show humanity that works righteousness is impossible. It will never work. It is too hard. In Romans 10, Paul teaches that righteousness in Jesus is accessible to all. It is easy for us because Jesus has done all the work!
Easy accessibility to righteousness and equal availability to righteousness is the good news. It is gospel truth that we rejoice in. Come this Sunday to worship together as we lean into the gospel of Jesus!
