Often times when law enforcement and legal people are trying to solve a crime they conclude that they should “follow the money.” Behind the violence, deceit, and crime there is most likely a connection to greed. People are motivated and driven by the love of money. This is the case in Ephesus in Acts 19:21-41. Paul’s opponents at this time in Ephesus are concerned about their business interests being affected by Paul’s success in gospel preaching. People have believed, confessed, repented, and are now not buying the things they used to buy. But there is something deeper going on in Ephesus.
Money is not totally to blame. There is the issue of idolatry. The Ephesians are worshipping many other things besides God. They are worshipping the goddess Artemis, their local civic pride, comfort, status-quo, and, of course, money. In the spiritual sense, we do not only follow the money, we follow the idols. The idols we worship show us what we need to repent of to follow Jesus. Idols consume us. Idols deceive us. And most importantly, idols lead us away from Jesus.
This Sunday we will look further into the idol-worshipping, money-loving, Jesus-dodging Ephesians. As we look at them, we will learn about our own hearts. Come and see the hope of Jesus in the midst of idol worship!
