Family life can be complicated. Fathers can be adored in one family and despised in another. One father can be trying his absolute best, while another is simply not available. Life in this fallen world can lead to terrible memories of family life. At the best family life is complicated, and at the worst it feels like hell on earth. No wonder some people are troubled with the concept of God as our Father. Some bristle at the theological concept of a Father/child relationship between God and us. Yet, that is the truth the Bible presents us with in Romans 8:12-17. God is our Father. We are His children.
The good news of the gospel is that God our Father is perfect. Perfect in His love. Perfect in His care and protection. Perfect in His provision for us. Perfect in his absolute commitment to us - Rom. 8:39 tells us nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God. This is why Paul cries out to God, “Abba, Father!” This is the most intimate address to God. “Abba” is directly translated, “Daddy.” Jesus addressed God as Abba in the garden of Gethsemane before he went to the cross. In Jesus’s time of deepest need he called out to God in an intimate, emotional way. And we come to God in the same way. Desperate. Emotional. Needy. We go to our “Abba, Father.”
This Sunday Romans takes us to our “Abba, Father.” Let’s go together to discover the deep, deep love of God toward us. It reminds us of our identity as loved children and gives us rock solid hope for the future!
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, buy you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry ‘Abba, Father!’” Rom. 8:15
