In our present political and church climate we need urgency and clarity in defining the church. I fear the American Christian church is confused and misled. This happens in history. This happens to well-meaning, faithful people if they lose focus. This can happen to us at The Rock. The answer is found by looking to God for clarity. The answer is found in God’s Word. Our study in Acts over the last year has provided wonderful clarity for us as a church. It excites me to lean into this clarity even as the national church struggles mightily.

This week in Acts 20, we are given further clarity on what pastoral ministry is all about. And it is not just for pastors - chapter 20 is for everyone. If we don’t know what true pastoral ministry is all about, we are susceptible to counterfeits. My prayer is for the real thing at The Rock. We are all responsible for this. Let take seriously God’s call for the church! On Sunday we will read that Paul served the Lord “with all humility and with tears.” Come hear what that means. And, of course, we are not merely hearers of the word, but doers! Let’s lean in together and live our lives for Jesus!

A term used interchangeably with “elder”, “overseer”, “bishop” to refer to the main governing office of a local church in the New Testament. Translating the Greek poimen, the term identifies the shepherding task with the office of elder.
