A common statement made about one’s faith is that it is personal. Meaning, “I keep my faith to myself because it is between me and God.” There is some truth to this statement. It is true because one must make a personal decision to call upon the name of the Lord (Acts 2:21). But there is a lot false about this statement. According to the New Testament one’s faith is profoundly communal. Our faith is shared with the church community to which we belong.

The Greek word for fellowship is koinonia. The idea is “commonness” or “commonality.” It can be boiled down to simply mean “sharing.” Our faith is shared with others in fellowship. Yes, our faith is personal. But it is never individual. Faith is shared with other believers because we believe in the same God and have the same goals in life. We are in the Christian life together.

Acts 2:42-47 describes the early church as devoted to the Apostle’s teaching (studying the Bible), the fellowship (shared life together in Jesus), and worship (the breaking of bread and the prayers). I believe this is a counter-cultural message for us today. Certainly counter-cultural to our society in general. But also counter-cultural to the modern American church. Join The Rock this Sunday to hear the Word of God as it pertains to the church. Be challenged and be fed by God and His Word!

Theological Word of the Week:

Apostle

A recognized office of the early church. Apostles are in several ways the New Testament counterpart to the Old Testament prophet and as such had the authority to write words of Scripture.
