Another week of horrible news in our world. Children being killed at school is not right and everyone knows it. We want justice. We want help. We want things to be made right. All of us. Many disagree on what must be done to make things right. But all of us agree this world is broken and needs fixing when school children are killed in a place they should find security, education, and a loving community. Although I believe more can be done to address the problem politically, I ultimately believe we need the power of God to address the defects in our hearts. The defects that would lead to murderous acts. And the defects that lead to anti-God tendencies in all of us. We need the power of God.
The best and only way I can explain the evil and horrors in our world is found in the Bible. God tells us that we are born with a predilection to self-rule and self-desire, rather than a desire to follow and obey God and His ways. Taken to extremes, this desire to sin leads to murder, war, sex trafficking, and everything else we see as evil in our world. In our everyday worlds this desire leads to adultery, cheating, lying, gossip, and any other departure from God’s truth. The “good news” in the Bible, the gospel, is that there is not only an explanation for evil, but a solution. The solution is Jesus. Jesus saves. Jesus forgives. Jesus makes right what is wrong in the world. The power of God gives us Jesus. The power of God draws us to Jesus. The power of God gives us desire to live for Jesus. This is the power we need in the face of horror and evil in this world.
We continue in Romans this Sunday. I’m convinced God has brought us to the book of Romans to help us in our broken world. We need explanations. We need hope. We need Jesus. And God leads us there in the book of Romans. Come each and every week to be led to the truth of the gospel in Romans.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” - Romans 1:16
