At the risk of sounding old, I’m taken aback at the dizzying pace the modern world of internet, social media, and various online platforms moves. We have always evaluated, analyzed and judged people’s motives, opinions, and actions in our lives. But now, it seems to happen instantaneously and more widespread. With one tweet or quote you can be cancelled. In fact, there is a name for this - cancel culture.

Cancel culture can be defined as, “the popular practice of withdrawing support for public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive.” This can also be applied to ordinary individuals. We “cancel” people for various reasons in our lives. If one does not agree with me politically - cancelled. If I have been wronged or attacked for something - cancelled. If you keep me from my desires - cancelled. We might make it seem nicer with phrases like, “I’m taking care of myself by keeping toxic people out of my life.” (And that at times can be perfectly valid) But often it is simply impatient, unmerciful, and ungracious attitudes toward our enemies.

Jesus, of course, calls Christians to love our enemies and to serve our neighbor. Even when inconvenient, uncomfortable, or even sacrificial. This week in Acts we meet someone who could have very easily been cancelled by the early church. This young man named Saul was toxic. He was hurtful. He was triggering. Yet, by God’s grace, Saul was not cancelled. God changed his heart. The early church forgave him. And he became the greatest evangelist who ever lived. Join us this Sunday to hear more about Saul, the early Christians, and cancel culture.
