I’ve seen the memes. I’ve joked about it. I’ve laughed. I’ve cried. I’ve cursed 2020! I imagine you have also. As I grieved out loud (which is often Christian code for complaining!) last week during our prayer meeting, I was reminded of an important truth. I was reminded that God is at work. I was reminded that God uses suffering to grow us spiritually. I was reminded that there is purpose behind pain. I was reminded that God is at work even in the train wreck that is 2020!

The psalmist, David, cries out to God in Psalm 3 in response to his enemies rising up against him. He cries out in agony and pain, but also in hope and trust. David represents people like us who need hope in troubled times. David says three important things about God’s work in his life that are helpful to him. First, God is a shield about him - God is there and at work! Second, God is his glory. Not anything in this world - power, prosperity or health is the glory of David. But God Himself is who David worships. Finally, God is the lifter of his head. What brings David out of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness is God lifting his head to heaven. To Him!

May we remember this as we deal with what 2020 throws at us. May we remind one another, as someone reminded me, that God is at work. May we pray. May we read the Bible. May we fellowship with one another this Sunday to remind us God is on the throne!

"But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.” - Psalm 3:3
