Before Covid, cruise ships were an extremely safe activity. A Mediterranean cruise was a safe, lovely way to spend a vacation. We have come a long way in cruising since the Titanic! But first century sea travel in the Mediterranean could be dangerous. Acts 27 is the greatest shipwreck story ever told. There is danger, drama, lost hope, and gained trust in God! This Sunday we will see how God was at work in the crew of this ship in hopeless times.
The storm was threatening, paralyzing, and in total control. The people on the ship with Paul knew that they had done everything in their power to save themselves, and it was not good enough. They had applied all of their skill, knowledge and experience, and it was not good enough. The crew and prisoners of the ship had lost all hope in survival. Then God intervened. God’s work was more than good enough.
There are a few lessons to be learned. We can trust in God’s promises. We see Paul, a true leader, take control of a hopeless situation and give hope. And we can’t help but see the storm as a metaphor for the storms in our own lives. We all have hopeless situations where God can intervene. This Sunday we will remind ourselves that God is at work. We belong to God. And God is with us, God is in us, and God is for us.
