The rich, powerful, and influential have always had a place in society. Today, we look up to celebrities, professional athletes, industry leaders, and even so-called influencers as one’s to emulate and admire. The same was true in the first century during the book of Acts. There is a terrible downside to wealth and power… people think they are in control of their lives and destiny. Money and power have served them in this life. The danger is that influential people put their dependence in themselves, and not ultimately in God for this life and the next. This is the case in our world today. And this Sunday in Acts we will see this is the case in first century Jerusalem.

The Apostle Paul has been called by God to witness about Jesus’s life, ministry, and resurrection. God has led him to the “kings” of the Roman Empire. Acts 24 finds Paul before Felix, a Roman governor, in Jerusalem. Paul has an opportunity to publicly witness for Jesus. And he also has an opportunity to privately witness to Felix and his wife, Drusilla. Paul’s words convict Felix to the point of fear about “righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment.” (v. 25) The tragedy comes when Felix, as is typical among the wealthy and powerful, puts off dealing with his immorality and future before God. He is more concerned with money and keeping his power and position. Sadly, not much has changed in our world today.

Come worship this Sunday with The Rock and hear more about Acts 24. Our worship, prayer, word, and fellowship remind us of our position before God and our community with one another!
