Division among people is heartbreaking. We see devision in our nation - it seems any problem is now divided among party lines. We see division in families - it is tragic when families break up when they can’t solve their problems. We see division in the workplace and schools - many issues are made worse when people take sides and work against each other. And tragically there is division among Christians - when followers of Jesus divide over the same issues as the world divides over it is devastating.
This is why New Testament authors consistently call for unity. And unity in the Bible is ultimately not about issues. Unity is about a person - Jesus the ultimate unifier. When the early church was unified in “heart and soul” it was because great grace was upon them (Acts 4:32-33). They were all about following the commands of Jesus because Jesus had done a great work in their hearts. They wanted to please God and support their fellow believers in every way.
Is this possible in the church today? With all of my heart I believe the answer is YES! We believe in the same resurrected Jesus. We have the same Holy Spirit dwelling in us and providing power for our lives and witness. And we have the same words God has given to us for life and ministry. This Sunday at The Rock we will look closely at the early church’s unity and apply it to our lives today. Join us.
We are meeting outside at Manhattan Beach Pre-School. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, masks and Bibles! For a complete copy of our guidelines for re-opening CLICK HERE.
"Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.” - Acts 4:32-33
