The coronavirus is dominating the headlines, TV & radio, and much of our everyday conversation. It is affecting our daily lives more and more with event cancellations, school closings, and shortages of basic goods. How are we to think and respond as Christians? I will answer that question with a few suggestions coming from a biblical, theological viewpoint.
First, we are called to pray always. Pray for those suffering, medical professionals, at risk groups, and for wisdom in handling the information coming at you. I am challenging everyone to pray for something every time you hear or read something about the virus. What a powerful response to what is being put in front of us!
Second, love your neighbor. We can love our neighbor by obeying what pubic health officials are calling us to do. When we stay home when we are sick, wash our hands regularly, and practice social distancing we are not just protecting ourselves, but our neighbor. A Christian response is always seeking the best for others.
Third, perfect love casts out fear. We are called to trust as Christians. We trust God in all things, even illness and death. This life is precious and sacred, but this world is not our home. When we trust in the perfect love of God in Jesus, we can be strong in the face of anything, including disease and death.
Finally, we are to obey the command to not neglect meeting together (For now…). We draw strength from being together in worship. We encourage one another, pray for one another, and bear one another’s burdens. We will continue to meet for Sunday service, prayer on Tuesday night, and small group meetings. But if our local public health, the CDC, or WHO directs us to not gather, we will, of course, obey their directives. Even then, we will commit to “online” worship.
So as you personally walk through this time of turmoil and the unknown regarding coronavirus, pray, love your neighbor, trust God, and worship together!

Theological Word of the Week:
Pentecost
A Jewish feast during which, following the ascension of Jesus, the Holy Spirit was poured out in new covenant fullness and power of the disciples. This day marked the point of transition between the old covenant work and ministry of the Holy Spirit and the new covenant work and ministry of the Holy Spirit.
