SUPER BOWL SUNDAY SERVICE TIME IS 10:00 AM

Context is everything. Why we do things, believe things, and love things is largely based on context. For example, I love the ocean. I love looking at it, swimming in it, surfing it, and enjoying all the sea life in it. But in the context of being lost at sea for weeks, I don’t think my love for the ocean would be the same. In fact, it could be my enemy. Context in the Christian life is similar.

Telling someone about Jesus in the context of Sub-Sahara Africa is different than telling someone about Jesus in Manhattan Beach. The people are different in their experience, upbringing, location, language, and economic status. When our missionary friends in Burkina Faso taught about heaven the people paid close attention. They longed for heaven because their present life was so physically difficult. Preaching about heaven in Manhattan Beach is approached differently. In Manhattan Beach people are generally comfortable and don’t fear not being able to eat. Heaven for them may be more attractive to them for other reasons than survival. Context determines the interaction.

Paul knew this better than anyone. He was able to preach to different people in different contexts while maintaining the truth about Jesus. The truth of God in the Bible does not change. The way the information is delivered does. This week in Acts we will look at the Apostle Paul’s first recorded sermon. He brilliantly preaches in the context of the local synagogue. He uses the Old Testament to proclaim Jesus as Lord and Savior. Come worship and be inspired to live out your faith in your particular context.

Please take note of ways to gather for Sunday Service at The Rock:

Children's Ministry

We are providing live Sunday School!

Here is the plan: Children will be with their parents for the singing portion of the service. Children will be dismissed after singing to meet with Cameron and Courtney outside near the playground outside of the auditorium. Cameron will plan a short lesson, have a group activity, and supervise some free play. At the end of the service, Cameron will walk the children back to where we meet. This is 100% voluntary for parents. Your children are also welcome to be with you during the service. We believe this can be done in a safe and organized way. All activities will be outside. Every child will be encouraged to keep their masks on. We will do the best we can to encourage distance.
